Beware the Facebook Scams!

The chances are that you’re one of the 500,000,000 users of the social networking site Facebook. If that’s the case, you’ll need to know about a series of scams doing the rounds.

Status updates around the site are beginning to feature the same three updates:

  • I am part of the 98.0% of people that are NEVER gonna drink Coca Cola again after this HORRIFIC video
  • OMG!! Guys, you have to see this: This mother went to jail for taking this pic of her son
  • OMG!! McDonalds might soon shut down because of this, you have to see this

All three updates are then followed by a link. You’ll then be taken to a page that shows that scammers have really embraced the viral qualities of Social Media.

First you’ll be asked to share the status update and link with your friends, forming part of the scam’s distribution network. Then you’ll be asked to give either your password or personal details. You’ll have given the scam artists exactly what they want, and you won’t even get to see an incriminating video about Coca Cola.

So remember – always think twice before giving out personal information on Facebook. And quiz your friends if they’re spreading links that could be malicious.
