Bing may still be lagging behind Google in terms of market share, but it could start to make inroads in the mobile market following an announcement from RIM.
Despite Google’s dominance as the defaut search engine and map provider on Android and iPhones, Bing has been announced as the default for all Research in Motion (RIM) phones – including the new range of BlackBerry handsets.
The news was confirmed by Bing director Matt Dahlin:
Central to this collaboration, BlackBerry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the United States and internationally.
Also, effective today Bing will be the preferred search and maps applications with regular, featured placement and promotion in the BlackBerry App World carousel.
Bing’s good news is tempered by the fact that BlackBerry phones are down in popularity compared to Apple’s iPhone series, and the Google-influenced Android smartphones.
That said, it could be a very interesting time for mobile search, and a very good time to see how your website is performing on Bing.
