The majority of FirstFound Blog readers won’t remember this, but back in May 2009, Google launched a service which would change the very world we live in.
Rather than relying on email, instant messaging and Skype, we’d instead need only one single all-encompassing communications tool.
Google Wave.
Now, less than two years later, Wave is being quietly shelved.
And as someone who signed up for the Wave Beta, I can explain why.
It just wasn’t that good. There were very few advantages to Wave over email, instant messaging and the like, so there was nothing to entice users into taking it up. Other than novelty, which by June 2009 had all but worn off.
And a communications system with nobody to communicate with, is the most pointless invention imaginable.
There’s a lesson to be learned here. Don’t waste time on things that there’s no market for.

It’s sad to see it go. When I first received an invite for it and watched the presentation video, I was genuinely excited. The idea was great but there was no real community besides the developers and the few who received the invites. It wasn’t really user friendly either. I’m sure if they incorporated popular social media within the structure and redesigned the platform it could work. If you could download a file, read the news, have a conference, IM, and update all of your social media sites from one window then you’ve got gold.

I agree Mike, That’s exactly what they need to do or somewhat incorporate it into the email system. It was quite exciting to hear Google Wave in Beta so I decided to go ahead and try it: Though the concept and idea was brilliant as stated there was no community to actually test on… which leaves the question about the beta? If the concept of Google Wave was taken on a different angle and incorporate it into IM like you said Mike…. Though, Google could potentially develop there own IM. Through the Beta there is one thing I’d also say they need to improve which is to optimise wave to be a little more simple.
I’m sure there will be something on the way soon.
