According to the BBC (and other news sources), Twitter is to sell “promoted Tweets” that will appear on targeted user’s pages.
The first stage of Twitter advertising will see one paid-for advert appear every time a user carries out a search on Twitter’s inbuilt search facility. However, this is just the start.
In a move that’s riled up Twitter’s user base, the Social Media company has said that phase two of this scheme will see targeted adverts appear within a user’s stream – regardless of whether they’re following the company in question or not.
The online world has been waiting for a while to see how Twitter finally monetises its service, but this move could ruffle a few feathers.
