As yet more controversy surrounds Google’s Streetview project (this time they’ve been snooping on unsecured Wi-Fi networks), one of the company’s board of directors has managed to stir up another hornet’s nest.
In an interview with CNN, Google CEO Eric Schmidt was quizzed on whether or not street view was monitoring people (as some newspapers have suggested). Schmidt’s answer?
With Street View, we drive exactly once, so you can just move.
While Schmidt confirmed that no, Google isn’t regularly driving past your house to take your picture and steal your unencrypted data, his suggestion of moving isn’t entirely feasible.
Ignoring the fact that there’s a bit of economic trouble surrounding the housing market right now, Schmidt neglected to tell us that there’s not really anywhere to move to. From Alaska to Antarctica, Streetview is pretty much everywhere.
A better bet might be to disguise your house so that it doesn’t look like the Streetview picture. The FirstFound blog suggest purchasing a 20 foot wide comedy moustache to hang across the front of your home. Foolproof.
