Google’s Official Webmaster Blog has finally confirmed what we’ve all suspected for a while: That they are taking note of how long your website takes to load, and using that as a ranking factor.
So what does this mean for you?
Well, firstly, that you need to streamline your site. If you’re still packing your pages with animations, rotating gifs and other 1990′s leftovers, then you’ll be doing yourself no favours when it comes to getting listed.
Make sure that all your pictures are as small as they can be (in terms of file size) – do you really need huge, high resolution pictures on every page?
Finally, don’t panic too much. There are hundreds of ranking factors that the search engines take into account, and page speed is just one of them. Yes, having a faster site will help, but you won’t necessarily need a digital Usain Bolt in order to claim that top spot.
