Google have just made a massive leap and launched their own phone, another handset to be dubbed the “iPhone killer”. It is the first time Google has designed and sold its own consumer hardware device.
Google said the Nexus One represented the next frontier in the company’s $20bn (£12.4bn) core business – selling advertising through search. Google, like many in the industry, recognises that more and more people are accessing the web via their mobile phones rather than through their desktop or personal computers. Does this mean we’ll soon see Pay Per Call running along side Pay Per Click?
I doubt the Nexus One will be the iPhone killer, just because of the fashion branding and herd mentality, but it will help push the market in a better direction. Hopefully it will show people that the overrated Apple device isn’t just the only handset out there that can look flashy whilst actually having some power behind it and that Apple can’t keep doing minor upgrades which should’ve been as standard in the first place.
The Nexus One was built by HTC, who late in 2009 released a phone that I consider far superior to iPhone in every way, the HTC HD 2 – one of the most powerful handsets to date. There isn’t that much difference in spec between the Nexus and HD 2, the biggest difference is in fact the operating system. The HD 2 uses windows mobile 6.5, where as the Nexus uses the Google Android open source operating system, which is gaining popularity via several phone manufacturers.
The specs for the Nexus One are:
Its available directly from Google via their online store and can even have it engraved. Prices start at $179 (£112) if users sign up to a two-year plan with T-Mobile, or $529 (£332) sim free. It should be hitting Europe and the UK in the next couple of months.

I wonder if it’s more shatter resistant than the HTC Hero? Mine cracked like an egg the first time I cack handedly introduced it to pavement.

The Nexus is a less technical version of the HD 2, its not quite as powerful. Size is similar except the Nexus screen is alot smaller, it also at present doent feature multi touch but apparently theres an update that will fix it, in its favour though is that you get a 4GB SD card with it, you only get a 2GB SD with the HD 2. It mainly comes down to whether you want android OS (Nexus) or window mobile 6.6 (HD 2). Have to say though that I love the HD2 although its size takes getting used to when used for calls.
