Well, we’re a few hours into Google’s latest gimmick – a selection of arty backgrounds that slightly intrude on Google’s normally minimalistic homepage – and there’s alread a petition asking for it to be removed.
Luckily, we’ve done some digging around, and you don’t have to have the image showing (although there is a catch).
Simply sign into your Google account, and then click the “remove background image link” in the bottom left hand corner.
Of course, this will mean you’ll be subject to Google’s controversial “Personalised Search”, but you need to weigh that up against the prospect of using a Bing clone for a day.
Do you like the images? Hate them? Not know why anyone cares? Let us know in the comments section.

That doesn’t work, sorry. The default link is “change background image” even when signed in. If you select a different background then the link does indeed become “remove background image” but clicking this just forces a revert to the Google photo, not a plain background.
The last point about why anyone cares is very valid though

Strange, seemed to do the trick for us this morning.
It does amuse me how angry people get though – I mean, have you seen the Google forum backlash about Pac Man?
